When Hawaii’s students join the annual Pono Campaign, they learn more than reading and math; they learn life skills.

When Hawaii’s students join the annual Pono Campaign, they learn more than reading and math; they learn life skills.

Last year, Wahiawa Elementary participants learned new ways to respect their classmates. Konawaena Middle School Advisory groups learned about the Golden Rule, Pono, and Tolerance. Kailua High students ran a campaign to eliminate derogatory words.

Groups of youngsters looking for positive ways to address bullying and improve their school or community environment are encouraged to join the 6th annual Pono Campaign. This yearly initiative encourages groups from kindergarten through high school to create projects and activities that promote pono and respect amongst peers and in their communities.

Participating groups who submit the required information to the Pono Campaign by April 19, 2013 become eligible for monetary awards of $500 or more, offered to outstanding campaigns in elementary, middle, and high school divisions.

So how do you join the Pono Campaign? Visit the campaign website at www.growingponoschools.com or Google “Pono Campaign” for an informational flyer. Advisors can find various teaching resources, including videos about pono and social issues impacting youth, local and national websites that share various programs, and culture-based lessons geared for Hawai‘i’s youth. Groups are encouraged to pre-register online.
